Why You Should Remodel Your Houses Siding This Spring

Why You Should Remodel Your Houses Siding This Spring

With spring time vastly approaching, it’s a good idea to start thinking about carrying out some seasonal home projects. One that might really breathe new life into your home is replacing your old, outdated siding.

Man Thinking

Spring is an optimum time to carry out a siding replacement job due to the stable temperatures.

Signs Your Home Needs New Siding

Exposure to the elements over a period of years will eventually take its toll upon the exterior of your home. If you can visibly see signs of wear and tear, it might be time to upgrade.

Rot, Mold and Mildew are all common forms of damage that can occur on the siding of your home. Certain types of siding are more susceptible to problems than others.

Old Farm House Bad Siding

Take Cedar Wood Siding, a type of siding that looks absolutely beautiful and would fit the aesthetic of most New England homes. The problem is a high level of maintenance the siding requires to look good. Siding Rot and Mildew are very common problems with this type of Siding because it’s easier for moisture to get in.

The fact that it’s made out of natural materials also means it won’t last as long as other types of siding such as vinyl siding.

Resale value

New siding is a great way to not only boost the curb appeal of your home, but to raise the resale value as well. While it’s good to have a house that is unique to you, a house that stands out too much can bring down the property value. If there is a common theme among the houses around you, it can be beneficial to update to something similar.

Say your home currently has wood siding, which is a material that looks great. Many potential home buyers will see wood siding and run for the hills because they don’t want to take on the maintenance that comes with wood siding. Vinyl siding is a much more manageable option for your home.

Due to the nature of wood it’s impossible to keep water from seeping into it over time. The cost of maintenance far outweighs the benefits, and could actually end up doing damage to the next layer of your home.

When To Replace Your Siding

Almost all siding replacement jobs take place in the spring or the fall due to hot summers and cold winters. Siding plays a role in keeping your home insulated, so if you were to replace it during the summer it would be much harder to keep your house cool.

On the other hand if you were to replace it in the winter, it would be challenging to keep your house warm, plus snowstorms may cause damage to parts of your home that otherwise wouldn’t be exposed. The last thing you want is water damage seeping into your insulation layer. The costs can really add up.

House Money Costs

It’s also important to make sure you’re happy with other areas of your home before replacing the siding. Roofs and windows should be replaced before siding because it will be much easier to integrate the new siding into the home afterwards.

Deciding to not update the siding on your home could actually be costing you more money in the long term. If your insulation is poor, it will drive your heating and cooling bills through the roof and will potentially cost you thousands.

Repair Costs

This mainly comes down to new siding VS painting your home.  While you’ll have more freedom in choosing colors with paint, it will need to be done by a professional painter unless you have ample experience.

Man Painting House

While it will cost less up front to paint your house, the paint won’t last hold up nearly as long as new siding, nor will it take care of any insulation issues like new siding would.

Siding can typically last anywhere between 25 and 50 years, whereas painting on a house may last anywhere between 1 and 15 years. Painting itself also will not fix any of the other potential issues with your house such as poor insulation, rot, Mildew etc.

It Can Be Easy

Delaying your siding replacement because you’re overwhelmed by the project doesn’t need to happen. With the right company as your guide, a siding replacement doesn’t have to be overwhelming.
